Back to newsCrete has entered its annual fire prevention period, with authorities ramping up surveillance and protective measures across the island to reduce the risk of wildfires during the dry summer months. The initiative includes increased ground patrols, aerial monitoring, and a coordinated rapid-response system described as an "iron dome" of fire protection covering vulnerable forested and rural areas.
Tourists visiting Crete this summer should be aware that open fires, barbecues, and burning of any materials are strictly prohibited in or near forested zones during this period. Violations carry heavy fines. Visitors hiking or driving through rural areas are advised to avoid discarding cigarettes and to report any signs of smoke immediately to local authorities by calling 199, the Greek fire service emergency number. Compliance with signage in protected natural areas is mandatory.
