Island Overview

July 16 brings another cloudless day across Crete. Highs range from 28°C in Rethymno and Sitia to a peak of 32°C in Elounda, with no rainfall expected anywhere on the island. The dominant feature today is wind, which has built strongly overnight along the eastern and southern coasts while leaving the north-west relatively calm.

North Coast and South Coast Contrast

The north coast is the more comfortable side of the island today. Chania enjoys the lightest breeze at 13 km/h with a high of 30°C, while Rethymno and Hersonissos see moderate winds of 19-22 km/h. Heraklion sits at 25 km/h, warm but manageable at 30°C. The picture changes sharply further east and south. Ierapetra is the windiest point on the island, with gusts reaching 43 km/h and an overnight low that only dropped to 27°C, reflecting the heat retained on the sheltered southern shoreline. Ag. Nikolaos, Elounda, and Makrigialos all record winds above 30 km/h alongside the highest temperatures of the day, pushing 31-32°C.

Mountain Conditions

The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif inland from Rethymno will be noticeably cooler than the coast, likely 7-10°C lower at altitude. Hikers on the Samaria Gorge route can expect clear visibility and dry conditions, but the afternoon sun is intense even at elevation. Start early and carry more water than you think you need.

Sea State and Wind

Sea temperatures are warm across the board, from 24.9°C at Makrigialos to 26.6°C at Rethymno. Wave heights are modest on the south coast, with Ierapetra recording only 0.36 m despite the strong surface wind, thanks to its sheltered bay. Sitia and Malia carry the highest swell today at 1.24 m and 1.1 m respectively. Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda share a 1.04 m reading. None of these figures indicate dangerous surf, but wind chop will be noticeable at exposed beaches.

UV Index

UV levels peak between 8.25 and 8.55 across all locations, firmly in the very high category. The critical window runs from roughly 11:00 to 16:00. SPF 30 is the minimum; SPF 50 is advisable for children and fair-skinned visitors. A hat and covered shoulders during midday will make the afternoon more comfortable.

Swim Verdict

Conditions are good to excellent on the north coast from Chania through to Hersonissos. Chania is the standout choice today: calm water, a sea temperature of 26.5°C, and the lightest wind on the island. The east coast from Ag. Nikolaos to Sitia is swimmable but expect a strong surface breeze and some chop. Elounda's sheltered gulf absorbs much of the wave energy despite the wind. Avoid fully exposed headland beaches on the eastern shore if conditions feel uncomfortable.

Practical Tip

If strong winds are disrupting your day on the east coast, the south-coast strip around Ierapetra offers flat water and a warm sea in a sheltered bay. The trade-off is heat: with a high of 30.5°C and an overnight low of 27°C, Ierapetra will not cool down much after sunset.
