Island Overview
A stable high-pressure system keeps Crete firmly in summer mode on 8 July 2026. Every station from Chania to Sitia records zero precipitation and clear or mainly clear skies. Daytime highs range from 28.7°C in Sitia to 32.5°C in Elounda, placing most of the island in the 29 to 32°C bracket that defines a standard Cretan July day.
North Coast and South Coast
The north coast from Chania to Heraklion runs slightly cooler, with Rethymno topping at 29.1°C and a gentle breeze keeping the seafront comfortable. Chania records the calmest wind on the island at 12.4 km/h. Further east, Hersonissos and Malia sit in the 29 to 30°C range with light to moderate winds around 19 km/h.
The south and east see the day's warmest conditions. Ierapetra, on the south coast, peaks at 31.7°C with an overnight minimum of 26.5°C, the highest reading on the island. There is little natural shelter from retained heat in this exposed coastal position. Makrigialos, on the south-east coast, reaches 31.2°C.
The Mountains
No summit data is reported today, but the White Mountains above Chania and Mount Psiloritis above Rethymno will run 8 to 12°C cooler than coastal readings at elevations above 1,500 metres. Hikers entering the Samaria Gorge should carry a light layer for the shaded upper sections in the early morning.
Wind, Sea State and UV
The eastern half of the island carries the stronger meltemi today. Makrigialos leads at 29.1 km/h, followed by Sitia at 26.3 km/h and Ierapetra at 26.0 km/h. Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda both record 24.7 km/h. These are moderate winds, noticeable on the beach and enough to raise short chop, but not a concern for confident swimmers. The west is markedly calmer, with Chania at 12.4 km/h and Rethymno at 13.2 km/h.
Sea temperatures range from 24.8°C at Sitia to 26.3°C at Rethymno. Wave heights remain under 1 metre at most locations. Sitia is the exception at 1.14 metres, with Malia at 1.04 metres. The smoothest water today is at Makrigialos (0.54 m), Ierapetra (0.56 m) and Chania (0.60 m).
UV index peaks at 8.35 to 8.6 island-wide, firmly in the Very High category. Limit unprotected sun exposure between 11:00 and 16:00.
Swim Verdict
Conditions are safe and comfortable for swimming across the island. Sea temperatures above 25°C make bathing pleasant everywhere. The east coast is choppier but well within normal summer range. Best flat-water options today are Makrigialos, Ierapetra and the Chania coastline.
Practical Tip for 8 July
Beachgoers in eastern Lasithi, particularly around Ag. Nikolaos, Elounda and Sitia, should anchor their beach umbrella before entering the water. The meltemi gusts reaching 25 to 29 km/h in this area are strong enough to overturn an unsecured sunshade. Conditions further west require no special precautions beyond standard SPF protection and avoiding direct sun during the midday hours.
